In 1845, when financial difficulties forced Hermann von Pückler-Muskau to sell Schloss Muskau and the magnificent park he had been creating there since 1815, he moved to Schloss Branitz, which had been built in 1770/71 for August Heinrich von Pückler. At Schloss Branitz, Hermann von Pückler-Muskau again began to design a landscape garden in the English style – this was to be his »masterpiece«. After many years of travel and adventure, Pückler spent his final years at Schloss Branitz, where he devoted himself to writing and died in 1871. He arranged to be buried in a pyramid constructed in a lake in the park, the Tumulus. The terrace and golden steps of the castle will be transformed into a stage for the Sirba Octet’s evening of klezmer music.
