About the location
The site of the present Baroque palace was first mentioned in 1597 as a feudal manor. Ernst Ferdinand von Knoch, Lord-in-Waiting to August the Strong, purchased the estate in 1717. He already owned seven other estates, and this transaction so strained his finances that he was unable to complete his plans for a grand expansion of the manor house. He even had to flee Rammenau to escape his debtors. The architect of the Baroque palace was Johann Christoph Knöffel, known as the founder of the Saxon Baroque style. Knöffel also designed Schloss Gaußig near Bautzen and was involved in the rebuilding of the city of Forst after the great fire of 1748.
