About the location
The history of the Christian Weise Library in Zittau dates back to 1564, when parts of the library of the Franciscan monastery became the property of the town. Under the direction of the scholar Christian Weise (1678–1708), the library experienced its heyday and in 1709 moved into the »Heffterbau«, a historic building named after the mayor of Zittau, Heffter, which today houses an impressive baroque hall.
The library changed location several times in the 20th century, and in 2002 the public library moved to the former Salzhaus, another striking building in the town, which now serves as a modern cultural and library centre. Today, the Christian Weise Library is an important cultural institution in the region and offers a wide range of media as well as a variety of events, where you will soon be able to visit our photo exhibition.
