About the location
Location Dorfkirche Saxdorf
Address Hauptstraße 5, 04895 Saxdorf
The Late-Romanesque brick architecture of the village church in Saxdorf is notable for its Late-Gothic frescoes, a carved altar from the 16th century, and an oil painting from 1622 of Johannes Cummer, who was pastor in Saxdorf for 16 years. The church’s real treasure, however, is the parish garden containing more than 3,000 different plant species, many of them quite rare. The garden was laid out by pastor Karl-Heinrich Zahn (d. 2021) and his life’s companion, the artist Hanspeter Bethke (d. 2018). From 1974, Zahn was also responsible for concerts and cultural activities in the church.
