The Weinau is officially known as the Weinaupark and takes its name from three vineyards that have existed there since the Middle Ages. Until 1874 the entire area of today’s park was a moor. The area was used for commercial peat extraction at the beginning of the 19th century and in 1876 the “Moor and Mineral Water Spa in Weinau” opened its doors. Beginning in the middle of the 19th century, the Weinau moor was gradually drained and laid out in its present form. By the way, Zittau also once had a streetcar line, inspired by the train line installed temporarily in the Weinaupark for the “Upper Lausitz Trade and Industry Exhibition” in 1902.
