About the location
The cornerstone of the present Görlitz Theatre was laid in 1850, and the building opened in the following year. The entrance hall and its balcony were added in 1911. Since 1923, the theatre has belonged to the city of Görlitz. The theatres in Görlitz and Zittau merged for the first time in 1963. One year later, the new company was named after the dramatist and writer Gerhart Johann Robert Hauptmann, born in 1862 in the Silesian town of Ober Salzbrunn (Szczawno Zdrój). The two theatres separated in 1988/89 but merged again in 2011, with the house in Görlitz responsible for music theatre performances.
