About the location
The Zittau Theater am Stadtring, opened in 1936 with great National Socialist pomp as a newly built borderland theater after the old municipal theater in Zittau's Neustadt, which had existed since 1802, burned down in 1932, survived the Second World War unscathed. The theaters in Görlitz and Zittau first merged in 1963, gained their independence in the 1988/89 season, and merged again in 2011. The Zittau building most recently functioned as a playhouse until 2022, when water damage made the Görlitz theater unplayable for what was hopefully only a short time. Named after the most important German representative of naturalism and Nobel Prize winner for literature, the Gerhart Hauptmann Theater Görlitz-Zittau reaches out to the art-loving people of Upper Lusatia with an impressive four-discipline operation. The music-theatrical evening around Stefan Zweig's "World of Yesterday" will pose relevant questions to art and society in view of history and the future.
