Address Zinzendorfplatz 5, 02747 Herrnhut
The rich and culturally rich history of Herrnhut, the founding place of the Brethren community, goes back over centuries and tells of the "Bohemian Brethren" who in the 15th century referred to reformer Jan Hus and at the beginning of the 18th century, driven out of Moravia by the Counter-Reformation, found a home as religious refugees on the estate of Count von Zinzendorf. From then on they placed their community under the "care of the Lord Jesus", and the name Herrnhut for the colony was born. The foundation walls of the white church hall, formerly called the "Gemeinsaal" or "Betsaal," date back to 1756. Extensively renovated in several phases since 2005, the hall now seats about 600 people. The white color of the walls and benches symbolizes purity, joy and salvation. Until the middle of the 20th century, women and men sat separately in the Great Hall, and even today the left side is called the "sisters' side" and the right the "brothers' side".
