About the location
The towns of Doberlug and Kirchhain are more than 1,000 years old and merged to form the municipality of Doberlug-Kirchhain in 1950. The old Slavic name for Doberlug, Dobraluh, means “good pasture”. The construction of the oldest Cistercian abbey in eastern Germany began in 1184. The church was consecrated in 1228. Its architecture is a transitional phase between the Romanesque and Gothic styles. The original organ was replaced with an instrument by Johann Christian Kayser in 1789. This organ was extensively modified by Wilhelm Sauer between 1874 and 1876 as his Opus 209. The instrument continued to be altered in the following years, but in 2002 was restored to Sauer’s original specifications from 1876.
