About the location
Hoyerswerda was first incorporated in 1423, but the city, far from traditional trade routes, retained its rural character for centuries, with a population of no more than 10,000. The advent of lignite coal mining after 1950 led to explosive growth: in 1970 more than 70,000 people lived in “Hoywoy”, the hometown of singer-songwriter Gerhard Gundermann, whose music gave voice to the people of the region both before and after reunification. But the collapse of the mining industry after 1990 was devastating for the city. By 2018 the population had shrunk to only 32,700. The Lausitzhalle, with seating for 828, opened in 1985 as the “House of the Miners and Energy Workers” and has been known under its present name since 1992. The mosaics by Fritz Eisel on the exterior walls have been designated a cultural monument. The music played as an intermission signal in the hall is the beginning of the traditional miners’ anthem, the Steigerlied.
