About the location
The Silesian Museum is housed in the so-called Schönhof – a collection of buildings with a significant cultural and historical background. One of the three original houses dates to the time of the city’s founding in the 13th century. The large Merchant’s House hosted guests of the city, even kings and princes. In the second half of the 15th century, the buildings were transformed into a late Gothic »Hallenhaus«: the front and back houses were connected by a central hall. Following the devastating city fire of 1525, the medieval building was rebuilt in early Renaissance style. The room layouts, wall paintings, and decorations created at that time can now once again be seen both inside and outside the building following an extensive restoration prior to the museum’s opening in 2006. The exhibitions are intended for anyone interested in the culture and history of Silesia. From 30 August 2024 until 2 February 2025 there will be a special exhibition on the life and work of Jakob Böhme – the concert by Ensemble Sjaella will take place during the exhibition’s opening ceremony.
