About the location
The origins of the village church dedicated to St. Nicholas are not clear. It is first mentioned explicitly in documents from 1376. The history of the church is intertwined with that of the city; both were ravaged numerous times by fire and war. The church in its present form dates from the years after 1515; the interior was renovated in neo-Gothic style between 1850 and 1911. A lightning strike destroyed the church tower in 1894, and the tower we see today was built in its place. The unique ceiling was restored between 1998 and 2004, largely funded by private donations. In 2020 the church was reconfigured to better accommodate concerts and cultural events.
