About the location
The historic town center of Luckau, once an important merchant town where trade routes crossed, is dominated by the imposing Gothic hall church of St. Nikolai. The building originates from different construction phases from the 13th to the 15th century and has survived several city fires. The main altar is by Abraham Jäger from 1670. Of the interior furnishings dating from the second half of the 17th century, the High Baroque organ by the Leipzig organ builder Christoph Donat is the greatest treasure; but the richly decorated wooden galleries with the double spiral staircase and the sandstone pulpit by the Torgau sculptor Andreas Schultze also add to the church's fame. In contrast, the small effigy of Emperor Charles IV on the sandstone portal on the south side appears downright modest.
