About the location
The city theatre in Kamenz was originally part of the so-called Brewing Commune in the early 19th century. While the vaulted cellar rooms were used for fermenting beer, the upper floor was rented to acting companies. The first documented performance was in 1824. In 1833, the building was completely rebuilt as a theatre. The theatre is located in Kamenz’s Lessingstadt neighbourhood, named for the famous dramatist and philosopher Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, who was born in Kamenz in 1729. From the age of 12, Lessing attended the prestigious Fürstenschule St. Afra in Meissen, and later studied theology and medicine in Leipzig and Wittenberge.
