About the location
This is a building with a fractured history. The Steinhaus (Stone House) was built as a nursery for children. In the ensuing years, it also served as a girls’ school, an orphanage, and a dormitory for the Hitler Youth. In 1946, the Soviet Army donated the structure to the city of Bautzen as the first youth club in the GDR. Since then, the Steinhaus has been at the centre of cultural and social life in the city. Its program became even more varied after 1990, and today features a concert hall, cinema, theatre space, gallery, café, and an atelier where courses in painting and pottery making are offered.
