About the location
Location Untermarkt Görlitz
Address Untermarkt, 02826 Görlitz
Görlitz may well be the largest open-air museum in Germany, and the Untermarkt (Lower Market) is the crown jewel of the city, with architecture from the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque eras. It is mentioned for the first time simply as “Markt” in 1305. The Rathaus (City Hall), with its magnificent Renaissance décor, has been the city’s seat of government since 1350. The Ratsapotheke (apothecary) with its elaborate astronomical paintings dates from the middle of the 16th century, and the historic balance scale at the Renaissancehaus, with depictions of Görlitz citizens, was made in 1453. Local tour guides are able to offer countless anecdotes from the city’s history.
