Lübben Castle has its roots in the High Middle Ages, but its fame rests on the neo-Gothic Wappensaal (heraldic hall) from the early 20th century. The group of buildings testifies to the importance of Lübben as an administrative and military center for the Bailiff of the Lower Lausitz region. The walls of the imposing Wappensaal in the castle tower are adorned with 115 coats of arms representing cities, estates, and noble families; these include 22 aristocratic coats of arms from the Lower Lausitz that were obscured by pieces of cloth during the period of Communist rule in eastern Germany. The mural by August Oetken in the Wappensaal depicts the people of Lübben greeting the Elector of Brandenburg, Frederick II (known as »Iron Tooth«), in 1448.
