Orquestra Jazz de Matoshinos

Orquestra Jazz de Matosinhos is an active promoter and creator of new music, supporting jazz investigation, education and fruition since 1997 with the support of the Municipality of Matosinhos. Merging an international ambition with local responsibility, OJM plays the role of a national jazz orchestra, performing repertoires of all aesthetic variants and ages of jazz. Conducted by Pedro Guedes, it has worked with Maria Schneider, Carla Bley, Lee Konitz, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Carlos Bica, Mark Turner, Chris Cheek, Ohad Talmor, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Fred Hersch, Rebecca Martin, Peter Evans, Guillermo Klein, Perico Sambeat, Maria Rita, Maria João, Mayra Andrade, and so many more.

Frequent in major halls in Portugal, has also toured in Europe – e.g. Barcelona, as resident orchestra at Voll-Damm International Jazz or Vienna Konzerthaus – and in the USA – at Birdland, Iridium, Blue Note or at Carnegie Hall.
OJM is currently based at CARA – High Performance Centre for the Arts, in Matosinhos - which is also its new label. CARA's first edition was a digital launch of a live performance of “Jazz in The Space Age” by George Russel, live at Casa da Música (2019). Early 2022, “After Midnight” by OJM, Rebecca Martin and Larry Grenadier was released digital and CD.

OJM released a website with the project that takes you on a journey through the history of big bands and another one that archives and makes available for listening the complete catalog of the label TOAP that partnered with OJM in 2010.
OJM’s discography also includes collaborations with Chris Cheek, Lee Konitz, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Maria João, João Paulo Esteves da Silva and more.
Over these 25 years, OJM has nurtured conception and diffusion of art, supporting new talents, promoting dialogue with science and technology and always looking to the future.

Guitarist and composer

Kurt Rosenwinkel

Kurt Rosenwinkel has been a distinct and prominent creative voice at the forefront of modern music for nearly three decades. The American multi-instrumentalist, composer, and producer has gained international recognition for his deft artistry and unabated individualism since he first appeared on the New York music scene in 1991. His legacy as the pre-eminent jazz guitar voice of his generation is plainly evident on his eleven albums as a leader, each one the inspiration for legions of musicians young and old across the globe. Kurt’s aesthetic vision and multi-genre facility has caught the ear of some of modern music’s most prominent stars; collaborations with Eric Clapton, Q-tip, Gary Burton, Paul Motian, Joe Henderson, Brad Mehldau, and Donald Fagen are but a few highlights from a remarkably diverse and extensive catalogue of over 150 sideman recordings.

In the winter of 2016, Kurt formed the independent music label Heartcore Records with the focused intention of signing and promoting a new generation of musicians whose exacting standards match his own. Heartcore has also allowed Kurt to flourish in yet another dimension of music making, that of the record producer. He self-produced his eleventh album, 2017’s “Caipi”, and was more recently involved as a producer and guitarist on Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Pedro Martin’s 2019 release “Vox”.

The future looks intensely bright for Rosenwinkel, who is consistently busy as a sideman and leader of several projects. With plans to tour and release new material from his improvising trio Bandit 65, Brazilian rock/fusion band Caipi, and a forthcoming live solo album, this visionary artist doesn’t appear to be slowing down any time soon.
