Klangforum Wien mesmerized audiences in last year’s Lausitz Festival. They now return with a program dedicated to Olivier Messiaen and his legacy. Messiaen’s music was in many ways an echo of the Impressionists who came before him, an echo he passed on to his students, among them Tristan Murail, with his spectral sounds, and George Benjamin, who combines complex musical architecture with sensuous beauty. “Vox temporanum” by Messiaen’s contemporary Gérard Grisey describes the turbulent dawn of a new age.
