About the location
From the mid-18th century to the beginning of the 20th century, around 95 synagogues were built in Silesia and Upper Lusatia. The Görlitz synagogue, inaugurated in 1911, was the last to be built. The architects Lossow & Kühne had already made a name for themselves with Leipzig Central Station and the Staatsschauspiel Dresden before they designed this Art Nouveau building. Only twenty synagogues in the Silesia / Upper Lusatia region survived the pogrom night of 1938, and although the Görlitz synagogue was also looted and set on fire, it was extinguished for unknown reasons. After decades of vacancy, the building was ceremoniously opened as the Kulturforum Görlitzer Synagog in July 2021.
