A giant of technology stands in Lichterfeld: 502 metres long, 204 metres wide, 80 metres high and weighing 11,000 tonnes, the former F60 overburden conveyor bridge tells the story of the past and present of lignite mining in Lusatia. The F60 was built on site by VEB TAKRAF Lauchhammer (now TAKRAF GmbH Lauchhammer) between 1989 and 1991.
This bridge is the last of five series units built. It was in operation from March 1991 to June 1992 and the steel structure is also known as the ‘horizontal Eiffel Tower of Lusatia’ and towers 182 metres above it. The excavation depth of the two excavators in high and low cut is 60 metres in total, hence the name F60.
Following its decommissioning in the Klettwitz Nord open-cast mine, which was also closed down, the overburden conveyor bridge was moved to Lichterfeld and is now the centrepiece of a visitor mine, which is being staged with a theatre play for the first time this year by the Lausitz Festival.
