About the location
Drebkau, long a Sorbian community, was founded by Germans; the first official record of the town dates from 1353. As in the neighbouring villages, livestock trading was long the principal occupation. The town is called Drjowk or Drjewk in Sorbian, and Drěwk in Upper Sorbian. Today, a viewing platform allows tourists to look into the Welzow-Süd open-pit mine. An unusual attraction can be found in the village church in Illmersdorf, where 11 naturally mummified bodies can be seen, the largest such collection in Brandenburg. The wild carrots that grow in this region are the ancestors of today’s typical garden carrots.
