Krzysztof Kieślowski’s film does not deal with the seventh commandment, »Thou shalt not steal«, in terms of grand larceny or even consumer capitalism, but on a much deeper, more tragic, and ambiguous emotional level. Maika became pregnant at the age of 16. The father was one of her teachers and, to avoid scandal, Maika’s mother claimed the child as her own. But six years later, Maika’s need to relate to her child as a mother and not a sister becomes too powerful to ignore, and she plans a kidnapping. Who is stealing from whom in this context?
