A kind of magical water sprite, the nix has long been part of the mythology and folklore of the Lausitz, with its many rivers, streams, fens, and marshes. Nixes can have both positive and negative interactions with humans – as good spirits or evil demons. The nix also has a mysterious side: sensual and cruel. If they desire, they can pull people beneath the surface of the water: embodiments of human fear that rise up out of the deep. But love can also drive nixes to take young mortals to their underwater world. These love stories between humans and nixes, full of passion and danger, are told musically in this piece, with texts in German and Sorbian. Young people and nixes come together while dancing in barns or spinning rooms: joyful encounters in the rhythm of the heart. Supported by exuberant percussion sounds, language merges with the music of typical Sorbian instruments such as bagpipes and the three-stringed violin to create a magical theatrical realm bridging cultures.
