One of the reasons for Candide’s enduring sense of optimism in Leonard Bernstein’s comic operetta of the same name is his immense capacity for endurance. Even the most violent upheavals cannot disturb his innate resilience. What is the relationship of optimism and resilience? Does confidence – as understood by Descartes and Leibnitz – grow from conviction and rational insight? Or does it require a stoic tolerance for suffering? What sense of optimism led Bernstein, at the height of the Cold War, to identify with Voltaire’s Enlightenment ideals?
